This was a really interesting jigsaw and I wasn't sure how I would get on with this.  It was quite a hard and challenging puzzle but entertaining. There were no boring bits and it kept my attention from beginning to end.  I would definitely do this again. Maybe take it on a holiday away where I could concentrate better. Really enjoyable.

THE SNOWMAN AND THE SNOWDOG – RAVENSBURGER PUZZLE

Last week we received our latest puzzle as part of the Ravensburger Puzzle Club, with Christmas just around the corner there was only going to be one theme for this month. We were sent The Snowman and the Snowdog 100XXL piece puzzle to do and whilst Big Bird was off school poorly we decided to crack on with it.

 puzzle1

This Christmas themed Puzzle from Ravensburger is beautiful, its designed for children aged 6 years old+ and comes with 100 XXL pieces that are easy to handle. Big Bird enjoyed doing this one because she loves anything to do with snowmen and as it contains lots of them I guess it had to be a winner.  There is lots of detail in the puzzle and you will find something new the more you look around it.

snowmanpuzzle

We like the fact that this puzzle is made from recycled board. We are very keen to recycle everything at home so I think its great that Ravensburger have manufactured their puzzles with recycled board. When this puzzle is complete it measures 49cm x 36cm.

This puzzle is made of strong, sturdy card and the pieces fit together really well and do not lift up and pop out like some puzzles we have done in the past. We think that Ravensburger make the best puzzle, you can not beat their quality.

You can buy this puzzle for around £6.99 but prices may vary depending on where you shop.

The Artwork
The artwork used is licensed and subject to copyright. Permission received by Ravensburger to produce images in a puzzle format.
The Theme
Scene is of a snowman party in a snow covered landscape with animated characters: The Snow dog with his cute little mismatched socks for ears, together with The Snowman, The boy and Father Christmas (three characters made famous from being in the original (1982) short film), are at the forefront, smiling and waving.
snowman and snowdog 2
The Product
This is a puzzle for children and is available in four sizes from six years upwards. Ravensburger have ensured that as one grows (from early years and up), there is a Ravensburger puzzle to suit all in respect of age, ability and appeal. The Snowman and The Snow Dog is available in the following:
6 years (100 pieces XXL), 7 years (150 pieces XXL), 8 years (200 pieces XXL) and 9 years (300 pieces XXL) – NOTE the image shows Ravensburger puzzle (boxed) for 6+ years – 100 pieces, and, once completed, the size measures 49 x 36cm/approx. 19 x 14 inches. If fixed, can be used to hang on the wall as a decoration at Christmastime.
The Details
It should be noted that the size categories mentioned above are a guide only, saying that these are an excellent indicator for the consumer who may have absolutely no idea of pairing puzzle suitability with a child’s age. Ones personality and dexterity should also be considered however, as some boys/ girls, may prefer to exercise their skills in putting together an ‘easier’ puzzle fairly straightforwardly, and so, even though their attention may only be held over a relatively short time, that accomplishment arrives more quickly and so is more satisfying. Others may prefer something that is a little more challenging and see a slow revealing of the picture, and, for them, it will be a more in depth learning exercise than it would be if simply repeating a habitual process due to the repeated actions that familiarity brings. RRP £7.99. Available fromAmazon.
The Promoting
The Snowman and The Snowdog was an animated TV film released in 2012, and was a sequel to the classic short film The Snowman. It was created to mark the 30th anniversary of that famous original. This puzzle falls in line with much of the popular merchandise available depicting these loveable, timeless little storybook/film characters. Ravensburger 3D Christmas bauble puzzles

As part of the Ravensburger Puzzle Club we recently received their Christmas themed treats for 2013.  I’d like to introduce you to the Ravensburger 3D Christmas bauble puzzles.

Ravensburger 3D Christmas Bauble puzzlesAs you can see there are 4 different designs to the Ravensburger 3D Christmas bauble puzzles.  Each comes boxed with a display stand and cord so you can actually hang them as baubles on your Christmas tree.  What a great idea.

The puzzle pieces are made of plastic, are curved and numbered on the inside for easy construction and are 7cm in diameter when completed.

As the puzzles are aimed at puzzlers over the age of 7 years I took it upon myself to make the first one up.  I’ve made plenty of 3D puzzles in the past, but not in a bauble shape, or in plastic. I was interested to see how easy they would be to make up.

I decided to sort all the pieces out into numerical order and then put sections together, before assembling each section together.  Once I got started it was really easy and the whole bauble was assembled with hanging cord in about 5 minutes.

Priced at £9.99 and available from all good retailers these Ravensburger 3D Christmas bauble puzzles would make a lovely present for someone, or a little treat for yourself and the family!

Ravensburger 3D Christmas Puzzle Balls

We have been making 3D Puzzle Baubles today as a part of the Ravensburger Puzzle club. We were sent three of the 3D Christmas Puzzle balls and it was an ideal after school activity to do with Mr Z.

ravensburger

The puzzle balls are marked as age 7+ (7-99!) but I found that Mr Z was fine with it, although we did do it together so he had some support from me.
We had never tried a 3d puzzle ball before although the boys all enjoy regular puzzles. I was actually quite intrigued to see how it would work as I always wondered how the 3D puzzles go together and keep their shape!
The process was a little different than with a regular puzzle, as you need to find the correct numbers and start from 1 and work your way up. Mr Z loves numbers so that kept him very happy, and he straight away put himself in charge of finding all the correct numbers which we would be needing next, and needing soon. There are arrows on the the back of the pieces along with the number, to give you guidance of how to place the next piece in and this was all easy enough to follow.
ravensburger christmas 3d puzzle ballThe pieces are all quite thick and strong, so we found that once you have about 3 pieces in you can see the ball starting to shape up already.  There are 54 pieces in each puzzle and it did not take too long to make the puzzle, but its not over in a few minutes either! The pictures on each of our Christmas puzzle balls are different, featuring scenes of Christmas trees, snowy houses and santa and his sleigh. They all have a traditional look to them and remind me of the kind of pictures you would see on traditional Christmas cards in very festive reds and greens.

There is a stand included if you wish to have the puzzle ball as an ornament or a string if you wish to turn it into a bauble or hanging decoration. Once the puzzle ball is made it stays in place well – I did wonder how fragile it would be but it is not really fragile at all it can handle being touched by the kids.
Mr Z and I enjoyed making these and I will definitely look for more 3D puzzle balls in the future for us to do together, or once Mr Z gets slightly older for him to do by himself if he wants. They make a change from flat puzzles and are pretty cool. The added bonus with these of creating a usable Christmas decoration is also a very handy idea!

CHRISTMAS, REVIEW

Today was one of them days, the ones where you feel the world of everything on your shoulders. I didn’t feel very well but had a nice walk with my friend her baby and Baby J after the school run so that we had gotten some fresh air.

Once we had said goodbye to my friend and me and J hd returned home, I made us both some porridge and decided that today I was going to take some time out for me and him. My phone was dead due to me not being able to find it the night before and I shut down my laptop.

I was thinking of something nice and relaxing to do, we could watch a christmas film but that was too sameo, and then I remembered that Ravensburger had sent us a jigsaw to review, but not only a jigsaw but a THE SNOWMAN jigsaw :) surely everyone remembers watching this on a film day at school on the run up to christmas :) Well this time the snowman was with his dog.

I unwrapped the film from around the box, dug out of big jigsaw tray and explained to Baby J what we were about to do, granted he is only 2 and the box is from 6 years = but my intention wasn’t to get him to do the puzzle but to do something together.

I sorted the jigsaw pieces into two piles, the straight edges and corners and the non straight edge pieces. I showed baby J what a straight edge was by rubbing his finger on one of the straight edges, whether he actually understood I am unsure but he seemed happy with what I was doing.

Once we had our two piles I gradually began to build the edge whilst he attentively sat next to me watching and once that had finished he then began to pass me each piece so that I could try and fit them. It was so lovely to just have that technology free bit of calm time and it was also nice to have Baby J involved in it. I think Ky will love this jigsaw and I will putting it into his Christmas Eve box for an activity before Christmas day. Here is our completed jigsaw :)

Ive got a daughter who is One Direction mad! She just loves them to bits, she and already has posters, dolls and stickers etc. of the 5 boys. So when we got the One Direction 100 piece puzzle and One Direction 3D puzzle to review she was over the moon with delight!

Both puzzle and 3D puzzle have busy and detailed pictures that are packed with images of the One Direction boys Harry, Liam, Louis, Niall and Zayn. The 100 piece puzzle features a row of colourful polaroids, VIP pass and 1D guitar picks and this design is also on the 3D puzzle.  Fans of the band will find plenty to keep them interested and entertained as they piece together these quality puzzles of their dream boys. As usual these puzzles are made to the highest quality and the pieces fit together perfectly.

Our daughter really enjoyed putting the puzzles together especially the 3D puzzle. As the 3D puzzle comes with a stand she can have it on display and it currently has the top spot on her bedside table. She did ask if it was possible to stick the 100 piece puzzle on her wall to join her posters. As it happens, Ravensburger do sell puzzle glue just for this purpose so, I guess I know what I will be doing this weekend.

These puzzles are a must have for any One Directioner.

Both 100 piece puzzle and 3D Puzzle are available from Amazon

My two year old really likes looking at books before bed and one of his favourites is the Hungry Caterpillar so when we were sent the new puzzle from Ravensburger I knew he would be over the moon.

He is now completing them with ease and I’m sure he will want to do bigger puzzles next, like the 16 piece My First Floor Puzzle also from Ravensburger.

The Gruffalo My First Floor Puzzle

I have a 3 year old and a 4 year old son who grew up mesmerised by The Gruffalo books and the recent 2 TV specials, so when they received their first puzzle it was only right to get them Ravensburger’s The Gruffalo My First Floor Puzzle, 16 piece.

This beautifully illustrated puzzle is designed for children aged 2 and above and provides them with an educational but fun experience. My First Floor Puzzles are made from super-thick, double laminated card so if it does end up being chewed, it won’t get ruined as easily.

As the puzzle only contains 16 pieces, it is a great way to introduce children to the fantastic world of puzzling fun.

This particular puzzle contains a beautiful illustration of the Gruffalo, mouse, fox, snake and owl in the deep dark woods – making it the perfect scene to piece together for any little fan.

The concept of putting a picture together didn’t capture both my sons’ attention at first, but they soon got to work on it when they realised what they could create by piecing it bit by bit.

There are several other puzzles in Ravensburger’s Gruffalo collection including: The Gruffalo My First Puzzles, 2,3, 4 and 5 piece and The Gruffalo 4 in a box, 12, 16, 20 and 24 piece – so this gives them different steps to progress with.

The Gruffalo My First Floor Puzzle, 16 piece is available from Amazon for £8.99

Prehistoric Fun with Science X

20140303-185154.jpg
Ravensburger have bought out a fabulous Science kit aimed at young scientists aged 8 and over. This big piece of kit is the
Science X Prehistoric Excavation Kit and contains lots of fun experiments and projects all to do with dinosaurs. It’s sure to get young ones asking “how do I get to be a palaeontologist”

Inside the box is all the gear they need for lots of amazing projects. For some of them we found we do need a few odd household items too such as a box, tape or some glue.

20140303-185636.jpg

The science kit comes with a very useful manual which not only tells you how to do each experiment but also explains lots of facts about the dinosaur age.

20140303-185739.jpg

Inside the box is 1 ammonite, 1 Excavation Block, 1 Excavation Tool. 1 Thermometer, 1 Magnifying Glass, Plaster Powder, Triops Eggs, Triops Food, Triops sand, 1 Meganeura Model, 1 time line, 5 Plaster forms, 1 triops basin, 1 T-Rex model and instructions. There are 15 different things to do so the kit will last a while.
Some of f experiments involve putting together a giant dragonfly and a deadly T-Rex using the included parts.
20140303-190223.jpg
The models can then be proudly kept on display.
A few experiments involve making plaster creations from a Trilobite mould and plaster of Paris. Once the plaster moulds are made, further experiments can be done using these.
In Ryan’s kit was a piece of Ammonite.
Ammonite is an invertebrate with spiral chambers on it’s shell. It started during the Carboniferous (360 million years ago) and is therefore certainly an old slice of history.

20140303-190811.jpg

Using the included magnifying glass, Ryan is able to look at the ammonite in detail.
Ryan enjoyed doing the Excavation block. Using the excavation tool he quickly dug away at the block to reveal his buried dinosaur.

20140303-191118.jpg

Inside the block was a mini Stegosaurus.
The biggest experiment in the kit is
Triops. Ryan had Triops last year and enjoyed growing them and watching them get bigger. It’s amazing how they come to life and quite surprising how big they can grow.

20140303-191342.jpg

Inside this set is a plastic tank plus triop eggs, food, sand and a thermometer. We find the best water to use for Triops is cooled boiled from the kettle and find they are best placed near the window for sun light. They generally last about a month or so and usually end up with maybe 3 big ones surviving longest.

The Prehistoric Expedition provides hours of fun whilst learning. Even I learnt a few fun dinosaur facts whilst helping Ryan.

The kit can be purchased from Amazon at a reduced price of £26.72.

100 XXL of The Muppets Puzzle

The Muppets was one of the first comedy sketch shows I used to watch when I was young.  It was shown regularly on the Singapore English Channel.  I used to watch it every day and Kermit was my favourite but I did love Miss Piggy too.
Now they’ve come out of The Muppets show and into a new film called Muppets Most Wanted.  It will be coming out soon and it tells the story of the entire Muppets gang who are on a global tour, selling out grand theatres in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations.  However, mayhem follows the Muppets overseas as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper.

Ravensburger Puzzle has produced this 100 XXL of the Muppets cast members’ puzzle for puzzle fans aged 6 plus!  This is our first time testing out Ravensburger puzzles.  I have to say I am very impressed with the range of puzzles they have.  Do check them out on Twitter @RavensburgerPC as they regularly host giveaways!
Ms C is only 4 years old but she is ready to do the puzzle with a little help from her dad.  The puzzle measures 49 cm x 36 cm with 100 pieces.  The picture is very colourful and attractive.  It comes in a matt finish.  The pieces are thick, strong and easy to join it up.  The only problem is there are a lot of bits coming off back of the pieces.  Once the bits are brushed off, it is fine afterwards.  The puzzle can be done over and over again and kept safely in its box when not required.  We had to dissemble it as we don’t have space to keep it out.
We love doing jigsaw puzzles at home as they are a great work out for the brain and can be beneficial for improving problem solving, motor skills and eye co-ordination for both children and adults.  If you or your children are a big fans of The Muppets, you might like to consider this.

Disclosure: We have received the product to do an honest review.

Junior Labyrinth board game Ravensburger

$

The Junior Labyrinth board game by Ravensburger is the beginners version of the Labyrinth Games series. The board has 12 treasures to be found within the maze and you can move the walls to open up passages.

The player chooses a token to discover which treasure is up for grabs and then has to study a path to reach it. Sometimes it is simple but other times it requires logical thinking and thinking ahead,
If I push this tile will it open up the passage for me?
Each turn the player takes the extra Labyrinth tile and pushes it along one of the columns or rows marked with an arrow, this pushes all the other tiles along one and other players too if you happen to be standing on that line.
By shifting the walls the player hopes to make a free run directly to the treasure but you will discover this isn’t always possible and you have to settle with as close as you can get passing on the chance to win the token to the next player.
Once all the treasure has been collected the game is over and the player with the most tokens is the winner.
Verdict:
I like this game, it helps with problem solving and thinking ahead. The girls struggle at first to see what happens by moving the tiles but they quickly pick up the gist and are able to make better decisions as the game continues.
They are competitive and there are usually tears when one realises the other is going to win but that’s another important lesson in life too isn’t it?
I think as they get better at the game I won’t be winning so frequently ;)
