Ravensburger The Christmas Shop 1000 piece puzzle review

This time I think we have met our match with the Ravensburger 'The Christmas Shop' 1000 piece puzzle!  Although each month we always complete our puzzles this months offering has taken some doing...

Ravensburger, Ravensburger puzzle club, Ravensburger reviews, 1000 piece puzzle, jigsaw puzzle, The Christmas Shop, review, Christmas ideas, stocking filler

The puzzle is a depiction of, as you can guess from the name of the puzzle, a shop full of Christmas gifts, toys and everything that is Christmas.  The attention to detail is very impressive - there is even a Ravensburger puzzle on the shelf in the shop.

Father Christmas is there of course as is an endearing reindeer peering through the shop window at whats happening inside.

It is this attention to detail that makes the puzzle less than easy, with so much going on and so many colours and different objects to piece together there was no easy place to start once the corners were in place.  We tried sorting the pieces into piles that had colours on the same in the hope this would make things simpler, which it did to a certain degree, but all in all the puzzle had us hooked - we didn't want to be beaten!
Ravensburger, Ravensburger puzzle club, Ravensburger reviews, 1000 piece puzzle, jigsaw puzzle, The Christmas Shop, review, Christmas ideas, stocking filler
I have to admit we are yet to finish the puzzle completely and am sure we will within the next few days.

The Ravensburger 'The Christmas Shop' puzzle is certainly for those that like to be challenged and take their time over their jigsaws.

We loved the attention to detail and as always the pieces were great quality with no rough edges.

The Night before Christmas Puzzle from Ravensburger

Christmas is not to far away now ,the shops are stocking up and the children have seen lots of adverts on the television and it is getting us geared up for the festive season ahead of us. Just recently we received The Night before Christmas Puzzle from Ravensburger to review as part of the Puzzle Club. Its a lovely Christmas puzzle that I knew the children would love it.

Little Bird was really excited when he saw the Christmas theme,he could not wait to get it open and have a look inside. When he opened the box he was surprised because there was something else in the box that he was not expecting. This box also contained a Christmas themed door hanger that children can put on their bedroom door on Christmas Eve it says ”Santa Stop Here.”Little Bird loved it and asked if he could keep it on his door until Christmas Day,I said he could and he was really happy.

The Night before Christmas Puzzle is a giant floor puzzle,Little Bird could do this one really quickly,he found it easy to do. Once he had finished the puzzle he sat back to inspect the picture he had made and pointed out to me everything that was going on in the puzzle. From the reindeers kissing to guessing what was in very present that kept him amused for ages as he spotted something new. Whilst he was looking at the picture it got him talking about what he wanted for Christmas and I must say Lego appears to be very popular this year with him.

This puzzle has 32 pieces and is designed for children ages 3 years old + and is perfect for little ones to get them in the festive spirit. One thing we have noticed with all of the Ravensburger puzzles we have reviewed is the fantastic quality of the puzzles pieces. All pieces fit firmly into place and do not move until you break them up. Brilliant quality and worth every penny. You can buy this puzzle for around £8.95 but prices may vary depending on where you shop.

Ravensburger Puzzle Club - 1000 Piece "The Christmas Shop" Review

As part of the Ravensburger Puzzle Club we get sent a puzzle every now and then to review and when the Christmas one landed on the doorstep I was extremely excited but then realised I only had just over a week to complete it.  What with an impending trip to Nana and Pops' house to plan for, a poorly Spike and a Hubby on night shifts I had to reach out to a fellow Military spouse who had been complaining to me only two days before that his evenings were boring and lonely once his boys went to bed because his wife is deployed.  The remainder of this post is a guest review written by Robbie.

Only over a week ago, a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to join a focus group to assist in a review of a buggy for her. Sadly though my Rugrats are out of the buggy stage, but I offered my services in other reviews if needed.  No sooner had I said that, to my delight, I was being asked if I had the time to do a Ravensburger Christmas Puzzle. "Oh Yes, I have plenty of time to do a Ravensburger Puzzle" was my response!

So the puzzle arrived and it was a The Christmas Shop Limited Edition 1000 piecer, and I couldn't wait to get it open and get the edging started.  The picture is lovely and coupled with all of the shops getting into the Christmas spirit, I started to feel very Christmassy!  My first task though was where to put it and how to keep it out-of-the-way of the Rugrats, who obviously would be more than happy to help Dad out with the putting together.

The Boys had an early night the first night, and I duely started on sorting the edges and corners out through the box.  The target for the first evening was to get the outside done.  After much sorting and a bit of re-jigging the outside was cracked on the Friday night, but as most avid puzzlers out there know, that wasn't enough.  I eventually managed to drag myself away and go to bed.

Ravensburger use a high quality cardboard for their pieces and you can really feel this when you are putting them together.  The pieces are sturdy and the attention to detail is amazing.  I found that even if two pieces look identical i.e both Christmas Tree green, they are completely different shapes so there is no way you can put them in the wrong place.

I had a lot of fun doing The Christmas Shop and whilst being a 1000 piece puzzle and only having limited time in the evenings to finish it, I managed to complete it within a week.  It has almost definitely rekindled the Puzzle bug within.  Next thing for me though is a Puzzle Store as although the Boys didn't really bother with it on the coffee table, I think it would be best out of sight out of mind - that will at least me stop being so protective over it!

We were sent the beautiful Christmas Fayre Jigsaw Puzzle from Ravensburger this month to review as part of the PuzzleClub and what a beautiful detailed puzzle it is. Aimed at children 6 and above with 200 pieces the finished puzzle is 49.3 x 36.2cm in size, which is a lovely sized puzzle.

child completing Christmas jigsaw puzzle

The design is very festive and perfect for completing on the cold winters nights in front of the fire, there is plenty of detail to look at with carousals and Santas grotto, snowman building and carol singing it really is just lovely.

child christmas 200 piece jigsaw

My daughter who is the least interested in jigsaws and so takes the longest to complete them, loved this puzzle and sat down determined to complete it by herself, it took her a couple of hours but she was very proud once it was finished and hasn't allowed me to break it up yet, I am confident my younger 5 year old would have managed to also complete this jigsaw as he is fairly confident with puzzles and with the different areas of detail you can work through this puzzle taking in the scene as you complete sections, as soon as Chloe allows us to break up the puzzle I'm sure he'll be eager to give it a try!

Christmas Fair ravensburger last piece of puzzle

As with all Ravensburger puzzles the quality is great, with no two pieces the same it makes completing this puzzle much more enjoyable.

Our latest offering from Ravensburger was the 200 piece puzzle of The Hobbit.

My children are too young to know what The Hobbit is although they have seen the
trailers for the film currently showing at cinemas and I remember reading the book
many, many  years ago!

The picture features many characters from the film including the always brilliant
Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins.

It is incredibly detailed and complex and between me, Molly, Charlie and hubby
it took a couple of hours to complete but we love a challenge!!

This was made to the usual great Ravensburger quality we've come to expect and
with no two pieces the same it adds to the challenge.

If you're looking for a stocking filler for a Middle Earth fan then this would be ideal.

Ravensburger Puzzle Club Review - The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey 1000 piece Panorama

I remember reading the Hobbit at school and absolutely loving it.  With that came a love for The Lord of the Rings movie franchise.  Imagine my excitement when I heard that The Hobbit was being made into a movie being released today (13th December 2012)  Along with any new movie their is always memorabilia, from ti-shirts to toys to puzzles and Ravensburger haven’t let me down.  We got sent the Panoramic 1000 piece Hobbit puzzle to have a go at and boy has it been a challenge.

When it arrived I was really excited and got to work sorting the pieces straight away.  We can’t do puzzles with the boys around as they like to help and no matter how smart I think they are I can just about cope with a 1000 piece puzzle and I’m 26!  I waited until they had gone to bed that night and set to work.  The edges were fairly straight forward and it was done in no time at all.  I figured it should be a fairly simple puzzle as the picture was clear and the pieces were a nice size.  The only initial issue I had is that because it’s panoramic it doesn’t fit in the Puzzle Store!

When I started on the inside I started to hit a wall.  Some of the faces are quite large which means there are 20 or so pieces that all look EXACTLY the same.  I struggled to do it in artificial light as it’s much easier to see any slight differences during the day.

20121213_131511

We haven’t finished it yet but it is coming along nicely but we do have a challenge on our hands, which definitely isn’t a bad thing as we get the most out of the puzzle before completing it.

20121213_125355

As usual it is of top quality and Ravensburger never fail to produce a top notch puzzle.  The pieces are sturdy and fit together properly creating a really nice picture for any Hobbit fan to enjoy.

Ravensburger Puzzle Club

The December puzzles have just come in from the Ravensburger Puzzle Club and once again, they're bang on trend. The theme for this month is Peter Jackson's newly-released film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. As this is the first of three Hobbit films to be released - the second and third episodes are scheduled for 2013 and 2014 - I can see this turning into another hugely popular series so this puzzle will be a great investment, with renewed interest as each new film is released, preventing it from getting left in the back of the toy cupboard !

We received the 200 XXL piece which was perfect for the girls to do (with a little help from me, in particular to sift through finding all the edge pieces at the start!) but there is also a 1000 piece Return toMiddle Earth Panoramic for older puzzle/Hobbit fans. Sophie is lusting after the 3d puzzle ball version that she has seen in the shops too.

The completed 49 x 36cm design is packed with pictures of characters from the film, making it easy to complete. (Apologies for the lack of picture of the finished design - the camera battery had run out when I tried to take one #mummyfail !) We haven't been to see the film yet but we have seen the trailers so we recognised Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf with no problems. We'll come back to it after watching the film to see if we can name all of the other characters next time !

It's great for getting the kids to practise their observation and matching skills, spotting each character on the picture on the box and finding the right place in the puzzle. I could tell you about the lovely thick cardboard and precisely cut pieces but I say that every time so it goes without saying when it's Ravensburger now !

Being part of the Ravensburger puzzle club this year has seen us receiving some really lovely jigsaw puzzles and has provided us with a new puzzle each month to try out really igniting the childrens love for puzzles.

the hobbit new film jigsaw puzzle gift

This month we have been sent The Hobbit Puzzle; A middle earth adventure, which is official merchandise to match the new film released  yesterday 14th December 2012.

I must admit I am abit in the dark about the new film, but have heard it mentioned a few times, so I went off to have a google and find out what the fuss is about.

The Hobbit, an unexpected journey, is the first film in a new trilogy from J.R.R Tolkien set in the Middle Earth some 60 years before Lord of the Rings following the journey of the title character Bilbo Baggins, the Hobbit. The film sees him partaking on an adventure through Middle Earth to try to protect the Dwarf Kingdom, as they battle Orcs, Sourcers, Deadly Wargs and of course meet goblins, one of which is Gollum and changes Bilbos life forever.

Now we are big fans of Lord of the Rings and my eldest loves all three films so the characters are already familiar to us. With the popularity of Lord of the Rings to go by I am sure this trilogy following The Hobbit  will be hugely popular.

Gandalf the Grey in the Hobbit film december 2012 jigsaw

The Ravensburger Hobbit Jigsaw puzzle has a interesting picture showcasing some of the characters from the new film, the familiar faces include Gandalf the Grey and Bilbo Baggins amongst others all in action packed poses ready for battle.

The jigsaw is aged 8 plus and has 200 pieces with a completed size of 49 x 36cm

The puzzle pieces are great quality yet because of the detail in the picture they are all rather dark and it is therefore a slightly more difficult puzzle to complete than other 200 piece puzzles in the Ravensburger range and took Jake, my 10 year old, a few hours to complete spread over a couple of days.

The Hobbit film 2012 gift ideas

With the almost guaranteed popularity of the new trilogy I am sure any fan would appreciate this Jigsaw, even if you have no intentions of going to see the films in the cinema this puzzle would be a warm welcome to alot of young teens who are already fans of Lord of the Rings.

Look out for this puzzle at Amazon now priced around £8 Which is a great price for this popular themed puzzle.

Octonauts Sea eels and ladders game

We recently received the Octonauts Sea eels and ladders game as part of the Ravensburger Puzzle Club and the children were really excited about this one. They love snakes and ladders but thats one game that we do not have, they play it at Nannys house and normally when they go round its the first game they ask to play when they walk through the door.

The game board comes in three pieces and fits together like a large jigsaw puzzle, it is double sided therefore there is 2 different games for children to play. Octonauts Sea eels and ladders is a fun game designed for children aged 3 years old+ and can be played with 2-4 players.

Octonauts Sea eels and ladders 2 in 1 game is great fun, families will love getting together to play it. Its perfect for smaller children because these games only last 5-10 minutes so they do not have time to lose interest. The boards are brightly coloured and there is lots for the children to see on them. My two children have really enjoyed playing this game. Little Birds loses concentration with some games quick because they are to long but this one was perfect for him.

When your playing the Sea eels and ladders game with the Octonauts gang you can either play an easy version with a coloured dice,or a trickier game with the numbered dice, its nice to be able to vary the way you play the game my children like playing both ways. Big Bird is a bit older and loves the numbered dice best.

If your looking to buy Octonauts Sea eels and ladders 2 in 1 game you will be looking to pay around £10.99 prices may vary depending on where you shop.

Hobbit Panorama 1000pc puzzle

The entire family is Lord of The Rings and Hobbit crazy, so when they heard that the next puzzle from the Ravensburger Puzzle Club may be Hobbit related they were VERY excited.

The puzzle arrived just before the release of the film, and I was keen to get it reviewed before the entire country went Hobbit hyper, however, it wasn't that easy...

I began putting the outside edge together (how I always begin a puzzle) and quickly realised that it would not fit in the puzzle store, it is a panoramic shot, meaning long and narrow, that's OK I just put it together on the kitchen table!

After completing the outside edge I began working on the distinct colours, the scroll pattern around the edge and then Gandalfs Sword and Galadriels face.

After that it became much more challenging, and I really started to struggle, the evenings passed and I found myself still doing the jigsaw on Christmas Eve, much to my husbands disbelief, I could see him shaking his head and uttering about needing the table for Christmas Dinner!!

The hardest part was the large amount of similar coloured pieces that were needed to complete the puzzle, they all looked black, but if you looked at them from a different angle, some were in fact dark purple, others dark grey.
Eventually on Christmas Morning, two hours before everyone arrived for dinner I completed the puzzle, hooray.

It is an amazing puzzle and I enjoyed doing it immensely, although if you are short of time, then please leave it until you have a little longer, but Christmas 2012 will be remembered for Mandi and her crazy puzzle obsession!!

As usual the standard is excellent and I am sure the older children will be redoing this very shortly.

As a member of the Ravensburger Puzzle Club every month we get sent a puzzle to review. The first puzzle we were sent for 2013 is a something different to what we usually review. This month we have been sent the Octonauts Sea Eels and Ladders game.

Inside the box you will find the two sided game board, two dice (one is a normal dice with numbers on it, the other has colours), four player pieces, 6 sea creature counters and instruction booklet. The game board comes in 3 pieces and fits together like a jigsaw puzzle.

The games board is double, it has 2 different games for children to play. Octonauts Sea eels and ladders is a fun game designed for children aged 3 years old+ and can be played with 2-4 players.

I like that the board has two different games, you can either play a simpler version with the coloured dice,or a harder game with the numbered dice. The boys liked playing both games but I think James preferred the coloured dice version (he won both times he played so maybe this was the reason) as with the numbered version he needed my help to count out his moves. Nathan liked both games too and made funny noises when he landed on the eels, ladders or the animals. Both games last 5 - 15 minutes depending on the number of players and how well their goes turn out. This is perfect for the boys as they never play with anything for more than 20 minutes at a time.

I think this game is a perfect addition to any Octonaut fans collection. You can buy the Sea Eels and Ladders Game from most good toy retailers priced around £10 but this will depend on the store where you make your purchase.

This was a relatively easy jigsaw to do and such a pleasure. I love all things Royal so really enjoyed this one. This is one that the kids can help with too whilst learning who everyone is. An enjoyable learning experience for them whilst spending valuable time with mum/dad.  Very vibrant in colour and easy to complete as you can just do each individual person as a jigsaw and join them all together. Definitely one I'll do again.

We really enjoy being part of the Ravensburger Puzzle Club, because we are a family that love doing jigsaw puzzles. The children take after me and with their love for puzzles especially Little Bird,he spends hours as he sits quietly and slots each piece in the correct place. This week we were sent the Finding Nemo 4 in 1 Puzzle from Ravensburger to review.

Little Bird was really excited when this arrived because he loves Finding Nemo and has watched it so many times I have lost count. There are four puzzles in the box and they are all very colourful children will love them. Each puzzle shows different characters from the Finding Nemo film and has been carefully designed to ensure plenty of colour, detail and visual clues to help youngsters develop their jigsaw building skills.

As I said earlier there are four puzzles in one box, they are built so the puzzles can continue to be used as your child grows in ability and confidence. The four puzzles are cut into 12,16,20 and 24 pieces. Little Bird could do these puzzles easily and loved the pattern around each picture because it helped him to tell which puzzle he was doing.

.

Finding Nemo 4 in 1 puzzles are designed for children aged 3 years old+. These puzzles are made of strong, sturdy card and the pieces fit together really well and do not lift up and pop out like some puzzles we have done in the past. Ravensburger definitely make the best puzzle, you can not beat the quality. You can buy this puzzle for around £7.99 but prices may vary depending on where you shop.

Tree Fu Tom Giant Floor Puzzle

Ravensburger's 60 piece floor puzzle is a perfect example of whatever the outlet (DVD, book, video game, puzzle) - get the content right and kidz will excitedly consume themselves in the product.

Tree Fu Tom is incredibly popular with boys aged 4 to 10 years old right now and my own son's Hag (8) and Con (5) will endorse any product from a DVD to a tooth brush.

Within 10 minutes of receiving this puzzle Con excitedly squealed and began construction. He then went on to re-build it five times in three days, with Hag also building it once during this time.

As a fun activity and gifting idea - I couldn't recommend this product more. It's guaranteed to get plenty of repeat play from fan's and if boredom ever sets in, use some sticky back plastic for the back to create a cool poster for the bedroom.

Five year old Con rated the puzzle "infinity stars" out of 5. I think I agree with him!

Tree Fu Tom 4 in a box Jigsaw Puzzle

Boys and girls across the country seem to be going Tree Fu Tom crazy and my little man is certainly no exception so he was delighted to be sent a set of four Tree Fu Tom Jigsaws from Ravensburger.
Designed for monsters aged 3 years and over the box contains four colourful and well-made jigsaws which each feature a super clear picture of one of the lovely Tree Fu Tom characters.  Measuring in at W 19cm  x H14cm the jigsaw are cut out into 12, 16, 20 and 24 pieces allowing the set to grow with your monsters puzzle solving abilities.
Whilst at just 2 ½ these pretty puzzles are a little too advanced for the Monster to solve unaided the pieces are thick and durable enough to handle his rough handling of them allowing him to ‘help’ mummy and daddy to solve the puzzles. Thankfully the pieces are a really good fit ensuring that the little monkey can clip them together with ease and preventing the two year old terror from getting frustrated.
All in all the puzzles are colourful, clear and extremely well made and with an RRP of just £5.99 not only would they make a lovely present for your own little monkey but they would also make an idea birthday gift for the endless amounts of parties that mini monsters seem to get invited to.
These lovely 4 in a box Tree Fu Tom puzzels are available to purchase from Amazon.

Being a member of the Ravensburgerpuzzle club is one of the great perks involved in this blog and this game is no exception.

Ravensburger don't just do puzzles and me already own a wide selection of their memory games including a few new ones added for Christmas this year (Moshi Monsters and Hello Kitty).

A really simple game to play, each player gets a Minnie Mouse who is just in her underwear, you role the dice to receive items of clothing or a pet. The person who completes their Minnie first is the winner.

The girls loved this game and enjoyed trying to match the outfits with the colours, Alison going for the greens and Elizabeth going for the pinks.

A brilliant game at a brilliant price, a great gift for any Minnie Mouse fan or even for any young girl who loves clothes.

This month we have been reviewing the Finding Nemo 4 in a box jigsaw puzzle from Ravensburger. We decided to wait until half term to review the puzzle and its a good job we did as we were stuck at home for the full week due to their dad working the night shifts at work and us all being full of coughs and colds.

You can purchase this puzzle for around £6 and you will find it in most good toy stores or online. Inside the box you will find the pieces for the 4 different puzzles. The puzzles when competed are 12, 16, 20 and 24 pieces. The different piece counts are excellent for developing puzzle skills. I thought we would have trouble finding which pieces belonged to which puzzle but we found them quite easy to piece together as they all have different borders.

Each puzzle measures 19 x 14cm when complete with a linen finish print to minimise glare on puzzle image. They feature some of the films characters include Nemo, Marlin, Dory, Crush and Squirt. Nathan says Squirt is his favourite as turtles are cool.

We can't wait to receive next months puzzle.

Science X CSI : Crime Scene Investigation kit review

$

As a teacher, I often sit it on the careers talks at school and, when the careers advisor asks the 11 and 12-year-olds what they want to be when they're older, I'm always surprised by the number of pupils who say that they want to work in forensics. TV series like CSI and Boneshave really made this career choice appealing to the younger generations so I was keen to see what Sophie would make of the Science X CSI : Crime Scene Investigation kit that we received to review. This range of kits was launched at Toy Fair 2013 and targets boys and girls from 8 years upwards. They're made by Ravensburger, best known for their extensive range of puzzles.

The kit comes with a detailed instruction booklet, which is packed with interesting information about forensics, as well as giving you precise instructions on how to complete the different activities. Sophie was champing at the bit, wanting to get hands on with the practical experiments, so she thought there was too much background reading at the start. It might be an idea to sit down and read the booklet (at least in part) at a quiet moment before you get the whole kit out. The quantity and level of reading explains why the kit targets children aged at least 8 though.

The box contains lots of interesting bits and pieces that Sophie excitedly unpacked : Magnifying Glass, Plastic Bottle, Measuring Tape, Pair of Tweezers, Pipette, Pair of Safety Glasses, Packet of Plaster, 5 Small Crime Scene Bags, Piece of Filter Paper, Funnel, Roll of Dough, Insect Card, Picture with Clues, Small Tube, Small Tube Holder, ID Badge, 5 Fingerprint Cards, 10 Crime Scene Cards and the Instruction Manual. That's quite a long list - but so is the list of extra items that you'll need to add from around the home: Banana, Cardboard (12”x12”), Cases / Boxes (small), Cat or Dog Food Cans, Dish Soap, Felt Tip Pen, Friends with Bicycles, Glass, Grape Juice, Hand Towel, Hand-Held Blender, Key, Knife, Measuring Cup, Methylated Spirit, Notepad, Paper, Pencil, Plastic Bags, Plastic Bowl, Ruler, Salt, Scissors, Shoe, Shoebox, Skin Cream, Soil, Spoon, Stop Watch, Sugar, Tape, Teaspoon, Tub or Shower, Water, Wooden Stick. You'll probably have most of them but you may well be missing a few bits so have a good sort out beforehand, to avoid disappointment, and make sure you set aside a large area for assembling everything you need !

The kit invites you to take part in twelve experiments, from collecting evidence with sellotape (Sophie picked up mainly dog hair and biscuit crumbs from our "crime scene" !) to making plaster casts of footprints, comparing tyre tracks, making a copy of a key, taking finger prints and even analysing blood spatter (don't worry - no blood needed !). It's a very complete and in-depth kit and one that will need to be done in several sessions because there is far too much to do in one go. That's great if you need to keep the kids entertained during the school holidays, for example.

Sophie had a lot of fun with it and learnt a lot, getting answers to questions she'd already wondered about but also thinking about things she'd never considered before. One thing I did notice though is that the packaging says that direct adult supervision is required but there is only one pair of protective goggles - hmmm !

National Science and Engineering Week will be kicking off next week (from 15th-24th March) so if you fancy getting your kids interested in something that's fun and educational in honour of the occasion, this kit is bound to appeal. Look out for the other products in the range, including Crystals & Gemstones, Electronics & Circuitry, Triops & Dinosaurs, Simulating Nature and Secret Messages & Codes.
